Marking rules: 2026 compared with 2024
| On the OMR sheet | 2026 deduction | 2024 deduction |
|---|---|---|
| A question left blank (no bubble darkened, not even [E]) | 0.5 mark | 2 marks |
| Left hand thumb impression not affixed on the OMR sheet | 0.5 mark | 2 marks |
| Register number written wrongly on a non-personalised OMR sheet | 2 marks | 2 marks |
| Count of [A], [B], [C], [D] and [E] answers written wrongly or not shaded | Not listed in the 2026 deductions | 2 marks |
| Question Booklet Number not written, or only partly written, in the boxes | Not listed in the 2026 deductions – but you must still write it and darken its bubbles; if they are not darkened correctly the sheet is invalidated (para 1.10.1.13) | 5 marks |
The notification lists no deduction for a wrong answer. Darken [E] for any question you do not know – a blank answer costs marks. The 2026 rule reads: If none of the respective answer bubble is darkened for any of the question, (i.e., if left blank) 0.5 mark will be deducted from the total marks obtained by the candidate.
It does not say whether the deduction is made once or for each blank question. The 2024 rule read: None of the answer bubbles is shaded for even one question by the candidate, two marks will be deducted from the total marks obtained by the candidate.
The answer sheet is invalidated (not just marked down) if, for example, you use a pencil or any pen other than a black ballpoint pen, the Question Booklet Number is not darkened correctly, or every answer is left blank (Annexure IV, para 1.10.1).

Is there negative marking in TNPSC Group 4 2026?
The notification lists no deduction for a wrong answer. It deducts 0.5 mark if a question is left blank and 0.5 mark if the left hand thumb impression is missing; in 2024 each of these cost 2 marks.
